This late 1970’s deck kit house on a heavily wooded site features exposed wood finishes and simple, modern detailing. The sloping site, which cascades down from street level, required us to build a bridge to replace the previous approach to the front door. The original split level foyer plan provided little landing space upon entry, so the foyer was expanded to embrace the detailing of the bridge. The roof plane of the foyer addition is projected to provide protection overhead as well as to create an enhanced entry sequence between the bridge and stairway. From the sloping landscape, timbers rise from concrete pier footings to support the bridge extending up to become the posts at the railings. The support timbers were angled on one side to make for a more generous walkway and provide a memorable journey across the bridge.
The structured, yet highly organic attitude was carried through to the interior through the detailing of the kitchen renovation. Little space was available to expand the footprint of the kitchen, so the decision was made early on to make the most use of the available space and create more enjoyable relationships with the adjacencies of the dining and family rooms. The blend of wood, stone, glass, and metal finishes help this room shine as a highlight, yet complement the rest of the home.
